By around 2012/2013 digital cameras had developed to the point where they exceeded the needs of most amateur photographers.

Ever since then, all improvements have been slight and evolutionary. True, the newer cameras are measurably better than those made six years ago, but the differences are really minor for everyone but specialized professionals and gear obsessed amateurs.

If "best technology" meant "best photos" then someone must explain why photographs taken 75 years ago are hanging in museums and can sell for millions of dollars at auctions.

Exactly. I often think, when painting my fence, that had there been any real improvement in paintbrush technology, I too could be churning out Mona Lisas and Sunflowers for a squillion dollars a pop.

My neighbour invested in one of those spray painting thingies which are guaranteed to cut your fence painting time in half. So far he has managed to paint half of his BMW brown.
