Why Are Lenses Circular When Sensors Are Rectangular?
1

So all lenses I have ever seen use circular shaped glass but every sensor is rectangular in shape. So the majority of the circular glass in a lens does nothing because it is outside the field of view. Most of the circular glass is just deaf weight.

So why don't we have rectangular shaped glass in lenses to save big weight and decrease their size? This would be increasingly important as you go up to telephoto lenses that weigh a ton. Surely it makes a lot more sense to design a rectangular lens than a circular one.
