What's the point of the Z6 AF point joystick (sub-selector)?

Maybe I'm being a dumbass here, I haven't ruled it out. Been shooting a different brand for many years, so I'm still finding my legs with the Z6. Basically, the joystick moves the focus point around, which makes sense. But... the D-pad also moves the focus point around. Why do I have two controls to move it? Can the D-pad be customized to do something else, or maybe it doesn't always move the focus point?

I'm just not understanding something about the control setup here I think. The controls customization menu shows two options for the sub-selector - "Focus point selection" and "Same as multi selector". But the multi selector is also focus point selection 🤷🏽‍♂️
