Once I started a photography business I started to ask myself with every purchase “How will this purchase help make me more money?”

I find that 90%+ of time purchasing a new lens, camera, etc will not let me to answer “yes” to that question. It is quite a powerful filter. Having said that, is it a constant struggle not to lust after new gear even though the answer to the question would be “no”.

Yeah, I've been doing my corporate event work with Micro Four Thirds gear for 5 years. This kit outperforms the 1Ds & 1D MkIII I had before. And, I could easily still do my work with my even earlier 1Ds & 1D MkII, even my original 1Ds & 1D with more use of flash. And yet, I recently bought an a7III & a7RIII to complement my MFT kit. Why? My clients won't notice. But, I'm a bit of a perfectionist, and I enjoy working without flash when the ambient lighting permits. Also, I had a financial windfall that gave me the wherewithal. Without those unexpected funds, though, I'd never have done it, because I simply couldn't justify it as a business expense.
