Aide-memoire card for settings?

A very basic, proper novice, question....but I'm just exploring my amazing bargain Nikon D300 and starting to move away from the "programme mode with tweaks" which worked on my old Fuji bridge camera.....

Have had some right cock-ups, mainly massive under-exposure but that's all part of the learning curve and have been trying to see what went right or wrong.

Very coarsely seems that outdoors in fair light 1/200,F4,ISO200 or 1/320,F9,ISO400 are good starting points.

I'm thinking of making a little waterproof card with settings for various conditions to refer to.

Old news or a good idea?

PS To make you laugh - yesterday, having realised I had wasted loads of shots with a far too fast shutter, I said "sod it let's go to automatic"...twirled modes and said "Ah, A, that must be for Automatic". Oh dear
