Received the 80D Refurb kit - question about 55-250mm IS STM lens?

Hi,

I just received one of the 80D refurb kits from Canon, and while I am charging the battery, I thought I would check out the lenses.

I have an XSi and several of the 55-250mm IS II lenses, so I tried the new 55-250mm IS STM lens with the XSi, but I noticed something strange (to me at least).  I am not sure how to describe it, but it seems like the brightness of the image in the (optical) viewfinder is following the aperture (and zoom length).

For example, if I zoom the lens out to 250mm and look through the viewfinder, what I see is really dark... almost to the point of not being able see anything.  Then, when I shoot, the viewfinder image brightens up.

I have the IS enabled on the lens and it is set to the AF setting.

Now, as I said, I have two other 55-250mm IS II lenses, and they don't behave that way at all !!!

So does the IS STM lens behave completely differently than the IS II lenses?  And is there some setting or something so that the viewfinder will be viewable as if the lens is wide open?

Or, maybe is that IS STM lens defective (I did get one contact error message, but only one time so far)??

I am really disappointed (and puzzled) with at least that lens so far :(...
