I like zerene stacker. it's simple and it works.
In my opinion, the only need for control points would be to force alignment of pictures that aren't taken properly (change in axis, parallaxes errors) or if the subject moved.
The thing is if that happens, the pictures will not be correctly aligned whatever you do, and stacking will not be great. When that happens, I find much more easy and practical to just manually align parts of the photos in photoshop and also manually mask the layer to achieve a sorta focus stacking.
