D300 JPEG File Sizes

This question if more to satisfy my curiosity than anything else. I have been really getting to know my recently acquired D300S. After a day of shooting over the weekend I noticed two things regarding the size of my JPEG's that may be related.

1. For the exact same picture Active D-Lighting ON produces larger JPEG's than OFF.

2. I shot with two different lenses a Nikkor 55mm F1.2 in manual focus and a AF-S Nikkor DX 35mm 1.8G in auto focus. For the same shot The 35mm consistently produced larger JPEG's by as much as up to 2 megabytes.

I assume for the first situation Active D-Lighting creates more information so the compression ratios are lower. I am not sure for the second what may be happening.

My JPEG settings are set to Large, Fine Quality and Optimal Compression.

I realize that this is a very technical questions by any thoughts would be appreicated.
