Windows 7 support after January 2020

I have had Win 7 since it was released close to 9 years ago. Same PC too, a Dell XPS. Intel i7. Very reliable.

Win 7 support ends on January 14, 2020. No more security updates. Someone mentioned that MS will still provide "critical" security updates. What's the difference between security updates and critical security updates? Will MS continue to provide critical security updates if you do not pay to have that extended service option?

PS. My intention is to upgrade to a new Dell XPS eventually....maybe in a year. The old PC is about 9 years old and still working fine except for the occasional shutting down by itself (you get that blue screen warning message that maybe a device is not working properly).
