Is this a good, bad, indifferent deal and should I think on it a while or not waste any time thinking about it?

Used Canon EF 100-400mm F4.5-5.6 L IS USM Zoom Lens, Excellent Condition$852.99

If Australian $, not bad, but I would have thought pretty pricey for a used lens in US$.

I sold my original 100-400L (in Australia) in mint condition with hood, case, strap etc 2 years ago for the equivalent of US$840, so now 2 years on, I would have expected that price to drop a bit.

In addition to the points mentioned above, you should check for zoom creep - on the original lenses the rings that tighten up the zoom movement (to stop creep) wear out, and the lens will slip/creep no matter how tight you turn the tension ring. AFAIK, this can only be fixed by replacing the (felt?) rings inside, which a few years ago people (in the US) were reporting to cost around the $200-300 mark.
