Yes, my first idea was to backup, but after reading a few horror stories I guess the best bet is simply to take several cards with me.

No, your best bet would definitely be to backup your images.

Backing up doesn't mean you erase the originals,backing up means you have two copies.

It means you bring lots of SD cards, at the end of the day you make backups of the images you shot that day by making copies on your back up device and leave the originals on your SD cards, thus having backups of the originals.

If you camera has 2 SD card slots a simple way to back up is to have the camera write duplicates to 2 cards at the same time.
