5d4 vs Eos R for portrait photographer
Jul 7, 2019
Hi, i am shoot portraits on 5d2 and now i start thinking about upgrading my camera. I need advice, but first I will tell background and some my own thoughts.
I used to 5d2 ergonomics and control logic, so 5d4 is natural upgrade for me. But... I really want some mirrorless benefits to, so it hard choice. I am a stock photographer, and my work approximately is:
1/3 - is studio portraits. Even 5d2 af and speed is enough for this task, so i think is no sense speaking about this. But maybe you know more. I have 0 evf experience and i don't know how good is works in studio conditions...
1/3 - is outdoors static or not fast dynamic portraits. Single and group. Single shot AF of my old 5d2 works not good in terms of accuracy an stability. And it really works bad, when you shoot against sun, that i usually do. Side AF points is totally useless. And i have some concerns about my old lenses. My 50 1.4 (and 100 2.8 macro to) is just lives it's own life, and does not responds well to microadjust. It's not front/back focusing.... In conjunction with 5d2 this lenses just miss without pattern. So i have concerns - maybe with 5d4 main AF will be the same problems ? For this case eos R looks better on paper, and more better if consider the eye AF and wide AF area, that is will be helpful for me too. Yes, 5d4 have dual pixel too, but not so functional and without articulating screen, and without viewfinder. And i think ergonomics of 5d series is not so good for shoting with screen.
1/3 - is fast dynamic lifestyle portraits. Mostly group. I just say to my models "forget about me, dancind, whirling, and having fun, and I'll try to catch".(Very often after fast moving i stops models, and shoot static portraits in single AF mode.) No questions - my 5d2 is one of the worse camera for this task. It's need speed, 5d2 is not having it. It's need fast, wide zone and smart continues AF and 5d2 have just this 9 point nonsense. So i get sharp pictures mostly random. Very often i works with not very well focused images, and need downsize it to 12, 8 and even 5mp, to hide focus miss from stock inspector. And when i read about 5d4 or eos R af it's hard to judge in absentia, what will be better for me. But on paper 5d4 looks slightly better. It's have 6.5-7 fps, and i think i can figure out with control and switching between AF and shuter modes, it's still mostly my 5d2 experience with some customize adds. I have some concerns about eos R in this question.
I will be glad to get advice, especially if you have similar tasks in you work and have some similar experience. Thank you.
This is some typical shoots from last and hardest scenario for my 5d2
