Using a DSLR as a rudimentary optical comparator?

I need to measure some small (watch-sized) parts. I have a Canon EOS Rebel 35mm camera and several lenses including a nice macro lens.

It seems reasonable to me to add a reticle and a lighted camera stand to have something that will do what I need.

Is that possible to do?

Suggestions please.

Gary
