This is a really tough question to answer. Like others, I originally had the 12-40 and 40-150 and 1.4tc. All were extensively used, with the 40-150, with and without the TC being used as my sports lens.

The quality and results from the 40-150 made it by far my favourite lens.

There were two issues I had.

1- For walk around and event shooting I found myself often shooting between 25mm and 100mm and swapping lenses all the time was annoying.

2- For field sports (like junior football) and wildlife I found the 40-150, even with TC, a bit too short.

To overcome (1) I bought the 12-100. Superb. So good I got rid of the 12-40. Whilst my 40-150 was getting less use in the 40-100 range it was still my go to lens for sports and action, particularly with the 1.4 TC in the bag too.

To overcome (2) I bought the 100-400. Great. But now my 40-150 got less use in the 100-150 range as well, with or without TC. I couldn’t think of getting rid of it though as it was better for low light, closer range or indoor sports, handled better and produced sharper images.

The result is that for most trips my favourite lens (the 40-150) is getting left at home because other lenses cover a wider range more effectively.

Damn you 12-100 and 100-400... you have bullied my 40-150 and ruined my fun with it!

I’m really hoping the 2x TC works well on the 40-150. If it can come close to IQ of the 100-400 in the 100-300 range then my 40-150 will find a home in my bag again, with the 100-400 being reserved for trips to the zoo instead (never really loved that lens for some reason... it just feels a bit too bulky and clunky in use compared to the 40-150)

so, my answer to the OP’s question is that the 40-150 works really well alongside the 12-100, especially with the 1.4 TC in the bag too. The 1.4x TC would be on it by default, giving me a two lens solution of 12-100 f4 and 56-200 f4 with the option of a 40-150 f2.8 when the light levels drop. The problem is not how the 12-100 and 40-150 interact but rather how the 40-150 is squeezed out by the combination of the 12-100 and 100-400. The 40-150 needs some help from a good 2x TC to fight its way back into my bag on a regular basis.

Photo Pete ,

Ive got good and bad news for you ..... you should have not sold the 40-150 ..... I like it a bit more with the choice of 1.4 converter and the 2.0 converter ...!

Is that a bummer
