I'm pleasantly surprised by the black and white prints I can get from an Epson P400 which has no grey inks. It only has matte or photo black (depending on paper choice) ink.

It has a nice range of tones to my eye, and also according to a step wedge I printed. And it prints totally neutral (which is what I want, I don't need warm/cool b/w prints).

However, I'm considering converting it to a Cone Pro ink system, or getting a P600 (or 800) for their Advanced B/W driver, if it will print better b/w.

Would I get better separation of tones from 0 to 255. Or some other quantum leap in black & white print quality?

Without being able to make a comparative test print on each system (single black in the p400 vs Abw vs Cone pro inks), has anyone compared, or can anyone refer me to an article where someone has done this, and can verify that there's a significant jump in print quality using a printer with black + several grey inks rather than relying on black only to do it alone.

Thanks

For b&w you should look at QuadTone RIP, which is very inexpensive. Also there's a lot of experience on their 'Community'.

Try here first:
