That's possible never thought of that!

I thought exactly the same, as soon as I saw the image. If the camera for one moment thought the background looked like a better target, and decided to focus on that, it will take some time (how long depends on how the camera is set, now assuming the 6D Mark II has that setting available) before it switches back to the horse or rider again, even if the AF point has returned to the intended target.

I like action photo. I've taken thousands of such pictures, but I still make this error now and then.
