So, the DPR team has been hard at work analyzing the Sony A9's AF after the new firmware update. Here's what they found:

Yep, you read that right: The A9 is now "outranking the D5 and 1D X II." Now, with that development, it's pretty clear why this move by Nikon makes sense:

The open question is what then becomes of the remaining 2/3 of the lineup. I'd give that maybe another 5 years before being phased out.
