Side note...Exposure is the amount of light per unit area (the image plane illuminance times the exposure time) reaching a photographic film or electronic image sensor, as determined by shutter speed, lens aperture and scene luminance. Nether ISO nor amplifiers affect the amount of light per unit area reaching the image sensor.

Indeed not, but they sure affect the amount of sampled light reaching the ADCs... which is what matters in this case.

But it (higher ISO) makes more light on the bottom of the tonal range useable.
