I travel between Asia regularly but live in the USA. From what I observed on the street

  • most Asian♂ still shoot with their Canon & Nikon DSLR overwhelmingly
  • most Asian♀ only buy cheap cute Low-End mirrorless overwhelmingly

As the result, mirrorless are predominatly target @women in Asia. A reguarly check on BCN sales chart reflect this nature. It also reflect that DSLR is NOT DEAD, and still sales very well in Asia.

But here in the WEST, people buy mirrorless mainly for VIDEO production YouTube. That is why Big Mirrorless (Panasonic Gh2, Gh3, Gh4, Gh5) sell well in USA, but not in Asia. Sony APS-C NEX was largely a failure until...the

2014 Sony A7 (announce in Dec 2013) + 2014 Sony A6000 release

  • It is the 1st fullframe mirrorless camera
  • Smaller than Panasonic Gh4 with 4x larger sensor
  • Give Filmmaker better lowlight that Gh2/Gh3/Gh4 can't deliver
  • Give Filmmaker more Dynamic Range to prevent highlight blowout
  • Give Filmmaker more Bokeh / Depth control over M43
  • Sony A6000 also offer a revolutionary jump in AF performance
  • A6000 was one of the best AF camera in 2014, and still competitive in 2019
  • Sony A7 fullframe combine with A6000 APS-C established Sony sales growth in USA.  You can disregad previous NEX 3/5/6/7, it really was A6000 + A7 that ignite Sony sale chart in the USA.
  • Sony (like Panasonic) still has 1 weakness, that is AF in still & video

2017 Sony A9 in April was an AF Game Changer

  • 1st mirrorless that can compete against PRO DSLR in continuous AF (C-AF)
  • 1st mirroless that can TRACK VIDEO continuously without fail
  • It was expensive, but that AF technology quickly trikle ↓ $3000 A7RIII & $2000 A7iii

2018 Sony A7 III for $2000 is another Game Changer

  • Sony bring the A9 AF ability ↓ to a price level that average consumer can afford
  • Not only is C-AF impressive, but Video Tracking is now reliable for Pro Use
  • the new Eye AF is a game changer, and $2000 low price brings it to mass appeal
  • After Sony A7-iii, the entire USA market is dominated by Sony with its well earned reputation and video credit.
