I think it has more to do with the interface.

I expect conventional SATA to be around for a while.  But I could see a time when all internal drives have an M.2 type connection or something newer.

In that case, we would have to install a PCIe card to achieve that "legacy" interface.

Same as how does one work with an IDE or SCSI drive on a board that doesn't have the necessary connection.
