Car light trails.

I am having trouble photographing trails of light of cars as I always get bad results. I am using my Nikon D7000 with an 18-105 Lens to attempt car light trails. I have read many in-depth articles on the matter but as a beginner to photography most went over my head, but what I have gathered from these articles ore not to use too short exposures and not too long either, also to use a high F number and a tripod. These articles also recommended some filter which I did not understand as I have never used a filter before and don't know the benefits of having one.  Sadly though I have not been getting good results as either the lights are too cramped together they can't be distinguished or street lamps ruin the effect.

These are some of my previous attempts:

ISO: 100   Exposure: 15seconds   F/36    80mm

ISO: 100   Exposure: 30seconds   F/36   105mm

I was wondering if anyone might have some advice for me and would be much appreciated

Edmund.
