18-55 corners get softer when stopping down

Today I received a new 18-55 and have been doing a fair bit of testing.  I've been fairly impressed with the quality and was otherwise happy with my purchase but I decided to get out the tripod and do the old brick wall test.

Stopping down to f8 results in corners getting softer rather than sharper.  From 18mm and up through the 20's I'm seeing the same result.  Center sharpness is improved but edges quickly get softer.  Not the behavior I expected.

Around 35mm things start behaving normally and I see the corners and center sharpen up quite evenly but as you push on towards 55mm corners start getting softer again.

Anyone Know what's going on?
