I actually turn down sharpening a lot (normally past -1.0 and often as far as -1.5), in order to reduce the sharpening halos that SPP causes. I often set the Detail slider all the way to smooth for my foreground and background image and in the middle or close to the middle for the detail version, before combining those two versions in GIMP, normally sharpening the detail image layer in GIMP with a setting of 25 or 30.
