portrait question

hi I'm a beginner and don't know much.

I recently got a 50mm 1.4 lens for my nikon D5500. I wanted a low aperture for portraits to get a good bokeh. I adjusted the shutter speed and ISO to the appropriate settings to how sunny it was and for a portrait to be taken. However, the person was blurry and the background was clear. how do i fix that? I even tried changing how far i was standing from him.

another thing is - the f stop ring on the lens, my camera only allows me to shoot if its at 16, a display message pops up on my screen. how do i change that???

I am in some serious need of help!!!! please and thank you!!!!

thanks for your time, I appreciate any feedback!
