How does the leg length influence the size of the lens you can use? Rigidity? I have to say I used a Manfrotto 100 euro thing for 6 yrs and it did fine. It is easily worse than what I bought now...

Leg length is a minor factor, but the figures I gave were for maximum leg diameter.  In general:

  • If you hold the material constant, the larger the leg diameter, the better job it can do at resisting and damping vibration.  The longer the focal length, the more apparent the effects of vibration.
  • All things being equal, the fewer leg sections the more stable the tripod.
  • Again all things being equal, the taller the tripod, the more stability problems you're liking to run into.
  • If you choose a tripod with a center post, do not let it lead you into temptation.  The more you extend the center post, the less stable your setup.
