Demosaic (again) - Markesteijn vs Fuji
5

We haven't had a pixel-peeping thread for a while, so I'm bringing hell back

While tweaking denoising in darktable, I decided to use the pixels on my LCD screen as sample to see how much small details are squashed/removed by the denoise process, but I ran into an interesting difference between the Markesteijn and Fuji demosaic.

Here's a close up of the screen, the SOOC JPG (Provia) has less saturation on the RGB subpixels, comparing to output by Markesteijn.

SOOC JPG, Provia

Markesteijn 3-pass, 5 times smoothing

.

And similar finding at medium zoom:

SOOC JPG, Provia

Markesteijn 3-pass 5-times smoothing

.

However, things got interesting when the pixels line up with resolution of the sensor. The Fuji demosaic obviously deals very well with moire, I wonder if Fuji intentionally traded-off detail retention to fight cases like this.

SOOC JPG, Provia

Markesteijn, 3-pass, 5-times smoothing

Frequency Domain Chroma, 5-time smoothing

.

The SOOC JPGs, RAFs, and darktable output are uploaded here:

Would love to see the outputs from other software. Thanks!
