Pixel shift isn’t as useful as you might imagine.

It also doesn’t really make sense for a camera that is meant more for capturing moving subjects. Unless you’re shooting taxidermy I suppose.

Actually I'll find it quite useful when shooting products in studio (yes I do it often with the A9) and mostly because it will allow the camera to sync flash with fully electronic shutter..

Sure, and that is about the only time it’s useful. But I don’t think it’s on the top he list when it comes to improvements for the A9.

Yes..I agree with you, but it is a piece of firmware that's already there, ready from the A7RIII, so maybe they will simply put it in without spending too much effort in it, like with other functionalities (animal eye AF and intervalometer just to say a couple..)

Sony were very clear at the time of the release of the a7Riii that the Pixel Shift feature required a complete re-engineering of the IBIS system to allow for precisely accurate 1px micro-movements between shots.

Given that the a9 was designed prior to that tech being developed, it seems unlikely that they'd be able to add Pixel Shift as part of a firmware update (i.e. it would likely also require that a new IBIS system be fitted in order for the new firmware to work effectively).

Maybe it will make an appearance on am a9ii (though I haven't seen any rumours to that effect - yet...).
