tried all the canon TC 1.4 II vs 1.4 III and 2II vs 2III on a 100-400L I and 70-200v3
I already own a TC 1.4II and 2.0 II and i wanted to see how much of am improvement the III series are. Canon sent me the set to play with.
I brought the 1.4III with me with my 100-400 to saints training camp. The 100-400 even with the 1.4v3 i noticed that the focus was much slower. On my eos-r , my lens are pretty fast but even with the new 1.4v3 it was slow enough that i removed it.
Then i went home and did a series of pictures. I took a picture of a street sign @ 400 then i tried @800 with the 2xv1 and 2xv2. To be honest, it is hard to tell the difference in IQ. The same thing when i tried the 1.4v2 and 1.4v3. I did several test with AF speed by swinging back and forth between my son running and a statue in my yard. Again i didn't see much difference.
So then i tried the same exact test with the 70-200 2.8v3. IQ was about the same. I did an AF speed improvement with the v3 TC. It is hard to justify buying the new TC if you don't have newer lens. and to be honest the cost is also very hard to justify and you can't stack the v3. I traditionally have used the TC to get good moon shots or eagle pictures where i'm sitting there waiting. If you have more v3 lens, then i think the newer TC are going to help. but everyone who uses TC we all assume AF is going to be slower. For the cost of a TC 2xv3 you can buy a used TC 1.4v2 and 2v2.
I can post a lot of the pictures but trust me when i say the picture IQ is pretty much the same.
