Unsharp in portrait orientation: Nikon AF-P 70-300/4,5-5,6E

I just received a new Nikon AF-P 70-300/4,5-5,6E ED VR for FX (my D750). While testing it I could see that at 300mm the lens is less sharp when holding the camera in vertical (portrait) orientation. The reason for testing this is because in 2006 I had a Canon 700-300 lens that had a terrible sharpness reduction in portrait orientation. Canon later recalled the whole series due to a design flaw. The barrel was too loose and shifting location made the lens barrel tilt and lose focus. Funny that I experience the same with this Nikon lens. I have tested on a tripod, handheld with and without VR. Has anyone had the same experience? I'm not switching to another copy if the whole series is bad.

1st crop: left is portrait and right is landscape
