Question about stopping down for increased sharpness on primes...

So, all lenses benefit from an increase in sharpness when stopping down right?

Because I’m debating between getting a Zeiss 135mm F2.8 or the Sony 135mm F1.8 GM and it got me thinking if the Sony GM lens would be sharper than the Zeiss at F2.8 because with the Sony, you’re stopping down but with the Zeiss you’re wide open - Am I on the right track in the way I’m thinking about this or no? Would the GM be sharper than the Zeiss at any aperture given that the GM can go as wide as F1.8 and the Zeiss can only open to F2.8?
