Why not a square format sensor?
6

I just sent a letter to to DPReview outlining the advantages of using a square format sensor instead of the rectangular ones now in use. In addition to negating the need to rotate one's camera to take a portrait shot, it would also one to select the image aspect ratio to ratios other than 3:2 and 16:9 for example 2:3 or 1:1 with no loss of pixels. Envision, if you will, a 6000X6000 sensor instead of 6000X4000 sensor. More pixels and same lens. Portrait or Landscape. Your choice. No more "L" brackets. No more assuming an awkward pose to get that vertical shot.
