Top display behavior

Being forgetful all my life, I always try to carry a spare battery and XQD card.

Now I've decided to check the oled on top of the camera when I set out. Interesting things occur there, as probably everyone else has noticed.

When the 24-70/4S is retracted, it flashes "F--". Good to know.

When Z7 is turned on:

Lens cap on: Display is dimmed.

Lens cap off: Display brightens. Good to know. Works with an Otus, so presumably all chipped lenses, at least.

Turn on Z7, 24-70 retracted.

Display is dim.

Remove lens cap: --Remains dim.

Extend lens --Display brightens.

Replace cap --Display dims.

Turn on Z7, 24-70 extended.

Display is dim.

Remove lens cap: --Display brightens.

Display will no remain bright, with lens cap on or off,  lens retracted or extended.  Nothing will dim the display.

A strange minor inconsistency.

By the way, shooting in auto-iso, auto area AF, I sometimes find that the SS and f stop settings get stuck, and cannot be changed.   Is there something in the settings, or that I've done that causes this?   Or is the camera intermittently defective.   Turning on or of, or sometimes taking a shot, frees the controls.
