losing AF on 70-200

I have an AF-S VR-Nikkor 70-200 f2.8G that is my bread and butter lens for concert photography, which is what I do most of the time. I use back button AF. Lately I've been noticing that the AF doesn't kick in when I press the back button. If I turn the manual focus to get it close, then the back button AF seems to work. Until today. Now I'm not sure it's working at all.

I tried switching back to shutter button AF, but that didn't help. I tested back button AF on another lens, and it worked fine.

Which leads me to think the problem is in the lens. Any suggestions?
