I own both and use both. To me the biggest difference is that the autofocus on the 50 to 230 can be painfully slow like literally 3 or 4 seconds to crank all the way out and back in.  So like if your subject is five feet away and the focus is currently ten feet away and it decides for some reason to go all the way out to infinity and then back to five feet you'll be sitting there for 4 seconds. Yuk.

The image quality of both is quite good but I think the 55 to 200 is noticeably sharper.  I had rented the 55 to 200 and I did some direct comparisons of distant mountains between the two lenses and it was not really even close.
