Re: Canon LTM 50mm F1.4 or F1.8 (Haze!)

I missed this the first time around.

The f1.8 is relatively cheap but suffers badly from haze - I had to buy three before I got a half decent one.  The haze is always on the surface of the element that is immediately behind the aperture.  Obviously from gas diffusion off the aperture or simply from being stored object lens up.  In any case the haze permanently etches the surface of the glass and cannot be cured.  The worst example I have has fully etched haze over the entire surface of that element.  I also have the f1.4 and f1.2 - of these the f1.4 is probably the best value.

The f1.8 is otherwise a very good lens - well made.

I have not had etched hazed  glass on either but “had a shock” when I found haze on the f1.2.  Same place but the glass must not be so soft - it was easily cleaned.  All these lenses truly need  watching and cleaning if haze seems to be developing.  Luckily It is very easy to get at rear elements to clean them.
