E system is long overdue for a set of good, affordable, light weight midrange lenses. If someone could make a set of primes and zooms for under $500/500g- 24/2, 40/2, 55/2, 85/2, 135/2.8, 18-35/4, 24-85/4, 70-200/4 possibly- I think they'd do very well

Don't the primes already largely exist?

Samyang 24/2.8 is currently $279

Sony FE 28/2 is $448

Sony FE 50/1.8 is currently $200

Samyang 35/2.8 is currently $269

Samyang 45/2.8 is $399

Sigma 70/2.8 macro is currently $469

Sony FE 85/1.8 is often at $548 and will come down more over time.

Samyang 85/1.4 for $699 (a bit above your $500/500g but its amazing value and will also come down in price).

I am not the sort of person who, given the choice between a 24/2.8 and a 28/2 says, oh no I really want a 24/2 (or a 28/2.8), how unlucky! There will always be some combination that does not exist.

Assuming that you are not that pedantic, the key question is what level of image quality do you want. There is no way that these lenses will have Batis or GM level IQ and cost less than $500, no matter who makes them, and if they have decent IQ then there will be serious compromises elsewhere - the FE 50/.18 is a good example, with very good IQ but AF stinks.

A cheap long prime is still missing, but the cheapest AF 135mm lens in any mount is the ancient Canon 135/2L for $999. I think it will be a while before we get a 135mm AF lens at $500/500g. A expect Samyang to do one for around $700, but it will be a brick.

Personally, I don't think that E mount is long overdue for anything - the FE lenses have existed for only 5.5 years and the lenses have been coming out very fast over most of that time.

Anyway, now that CaNikon have their mirrorless systems underway, the third party folk will start producing a lot more, using the same designs with the different mounts.
