Hi guys, I'm fielding a question for a non-technical Canon shooter about a camera upgrade, but don't shoot Canon myself so wanted to run my thoughts by you guys here.

They have an entry level Canon currently - probably something like a 1100D or 1200D maybe - and looking for an upgrade. By their own admission not for any particular reason. This will be a bit of retail therapy or trying to inject a newfound interest in taking photos. They're keen to get another dslr, not interested in mirrorless.

Budget is around £300 (For non-Brits, the 1300D falls in this budget).

In the Nikon world the newest version of the entry-level camera is the D3500, but I'd also throw in a suggestion of a D7000 for the money, which is an older camera but still has good image quality and is from a more serious range where you'd start to feel the difference in quality and get a nicer viewfinder, autofocus etc.

I think the 7D would be the equivalent in the Canon world - so I'm thinking of offering the suggestions of a new 1300D or a 2nd hand 7D. What do you guys think of these models? Do you have any better suggestions/compromises I could look into? Any caveats or pitfalls to watch out for?

Thanks!

It has to be the 7D, buy it from a reputable dealer where you can choose one that has a low shutter count and you will get a 3 month warranty, MPB or London Camera Exchange are 2 places I can recommend having used them both before.

What about a lens? If your friend needs one then I recommend the Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS or the Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II. Second hand lenses can be excellent choices.

One easily noticeable difference between a prosumer DSLR like the 1100D and the 7D is the weight. The 7D is built to professional standards with a metal body covered with plastic. The 1100D body is basically all plastic, which is why it is lighter.

The 7D also has a lot of advanced features that may not be of interest to your friend.

Have you thought about a Canon 60D? You can get a second hand 60D body for just under $300 and a second hand EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II for about $85-$90 from B&H, and these come with warranties.

A second hand EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS is closer to $300 but does offer a longer focal length range.

Where does the 60D fall in the Canon range between the 1#00D and the 7D#? Is it current generation? How does it compare in the ways you don’t normally see on spec sheets, eg hows the viewfinder compared to the other 2? Thanks!
