What are the advantages of a curved sensor?

Curved sensors promise greater sensitivity, better image quality, and provide scope for simpler lenses.

Maybe a curved sensor could eliminate the need for distortion correction in these compact cameras. The downside is I can see where cost of manufacture would be much higher because each one has to be individually bent. We may not see these sensors until ways to mass produce them is devised.

I see two major problems with it:

  1. It needs to have a spherical (like an eye-ball), not a cylindrical, surface to work properly. This double-curved surface will not be easy to mass produce, as you can't just bend a flat sensor as described in the article. It might have to be moulded, not bent, into shape.
  2. It will only work with a fixed focal length (ie, prime) lens, not a zoom lens (eye-balls don't have zoom lenses). So it would be great for a future RX1, but hopeless for a future RX10. More probably, it would be used in high end phone cameras, which typically have multiple fast prime lenses.
