direction in sw-generated simulation (overhead view) for athletic game

I imagine someone has tried this before me.

Intel with their multi-camera setup in stadiums now gives a viewer 360 replay capabilities, etc..

But I am interesting in software based manipulation of (1 perspective) game film captured at a lower side angle that can be efficiently converted to an overhead perspective....

[ultimately for play animation]

Because athletic field markings are calibrated (precise known measurements), I figure this makes things easier to adapt towards a final standard output perspective.

Discounting obvious hurdles of having one set of data and unfortunate artifacts,

The steps don't seem too difficult.

As seen here from a quick rendering of a frame from a video online, then vantage point distortion applied by hand,

this can be easily done even with a video (easier if camera stationary).

The next step after perspective distortion is just applying Xs/Os to the feet position of the players.

Any thoughts?

Any ideas where I could find if this is being done out there???
