Why do some but not all Epson 3880 printers get clogged ink jets?

I have an ancient (bought first year the model came out) Epson 3880 that has been a gem. I don't print a lot and often go many months between making a print. It has never required more than one head clean to be ready to go. I just tested it after a three month quiet period and there were no clogs. My question is why do some of these printers have clogging problems and others not? Is it a variation in the manufacturing process, ie, some are just duds and others not, or is it more likely due to variations in the environment in which they live (most importantly, humidity)?
