The newer Lumix cameras have DUAL IS which in conjunction with exposure bracketing can do hand held bracket exposure shots for HDR editing in a computer. I know it's not the same as auto HDR or auto exposure. But exposure merging is super easy, and you get more control over the exposure. And if a good photo is worth working for I'll go the extra to get the better shot.

This is a 2 shot HDR panorama with two bracketed (5 shot each) exposures using exposure bracket, and merging in software.

Yes, absolutely. It's dead easy to do it in the computer using bracketed exposures. It's what I do.

But that's not the point. Panasonic are offering a feature, on several camera models going back several years, that Simply Doesn't Work a lot of the time, while phones and other camera brands manage it perfectly well. It wouldn't stop me buying another GX8 or its successor, but Panasonic need to account for that.
