From a business perspective it makes sense to consolidate down to a single lens mount.

And yet Canon have remained the no 1 camera maker for years supplying two camera mounts. Decades of being an exception?

And this was not because of the M - it was because of EF/EFS. The RP is the successor to EF. There is no reason that Canon cannot do with the RP what they did with EF/EFS.

What you are missing is that most APS-C users don't us EF glass. It is more expensive and larger, at least when you get into the EF glass that has enough advantage to buy. SO the advantage you see is not a consideration to most buyers.

Ask the following questions:

What does the EOS M line offer over EF/EFS other than size?

What does the EOS M line offer over the RF other than size?

Size is the reason for the existence of the M and the reason for its popularity.

Agreed. Do the SL dslrs outsell it or not?

Depends on the market, but differing numbers in different markets is partly due to familiarity. Most people in America and Europe don't understand mirrorless. With Canon and Nikon beginning to push their new FF mirrorless, this will change.

The EOS M diehards will be enraged and will talk about best value, image quality, etc....

Cute, try to frame it as irrational. I bought the M knowing it didn't have the best feature set, but it can use my EF glass. However, I mostly use it with EF-M glass.

Its not about framing.

But it is. When you talk about "diehards" being "enraged".

Most people use the M's with M glass. They end replicating their EF/EFS lenses because they are to big.

For those who use both, yes. But most APS-C users don't.

Most buyers of the M buy it because it it small and it produces good images.

You forgot cheap. Everyone likes cheap.

But it is not about cheap. When I bough my first M, there were options on the market with better feature sets for the same price and, I think, cheaper ones as well. And the SL series are in the same range.

The question is not whats good for the consumer, but rather whats good for Canon.

You go now and teach No 1 what they are doing wrong.

Again this is not because of the M.

They are No 1 because they have understood the market. Whilst this does not guarantee that they will continue to do so, at least they have a track record to base future prediction on. They are a, generally, conservative company and they have one of the most negative projections of the future market of any major camera manufacturer I've heard. So, I'm guessing they do not have 4 current mounts because they are gambling.
