Honestly, this is just out of curiosity, but I was wondering if you think it would make sense for Canon to abandon the M-mount and have just one mount for their 'full frame' and APS-C mirrorless systems. It may hurt immediately but arguably could be better in the long-run.
Why would it be better in the long run? The RF mount would mean bigger lensew and a significant source of the appeal of the M is its size.
Feel free to comment on thoughts too.
So, do you think Canon should expand the RF-mount to include APS-C bodies and lenses?
Most people think this is good or bad depending on what they want. Canon would need to do a survey of APS-C users to determine how many want the bigger lenses and smaller sensor. My guess is that it would be a few that want the extra "reach", but the majority of APS-C users want smaller cameras, don't care or don't know the difference.
Yes and no...
Generally speaking FF lenses are of better design/performance than their APS-C counter parts. So I can see why someone would want to use a FF lens on a crop body, especially since the FF lenses also tend to do better in the resolving power department.
The no part (to not wanting an RF mount crop) would mostly apply to zoom lenses. But for reasonable primes (so not the RF 50 f1.2), a lot of the FF ones can easily be used on a crop body by users with little to no complaint on size.
For example, when I had the A7III with the 55 ZA, if I had gotten an aps-c e-mount body I would have definitely appreciated the option of using that excellent 55 on it, rather than shelling out money on an extra "sub-par" lens.
The yes part... just as I explained above people won't want to necessarily buy extra APS-C oriented lenses for every FL they might want on their crop body. So not having the option to mount my RF lenses on a crop body, then canon will be at risk with respect to exactly what i am considering now. That I (and other consumers) would consider other brands. I find that canon hasn't exactly been generous with their EF- M mount lens line up. Up till now they had the excuse that people can adapt a lot of EF lenses (EF-S as well) onto their M cameras. But since I plan on going full in on RF as the lenses come out, the fact that I can't adapt them to an EF-M mount... meh. So since I need to think of the crop canon bodies as a completely different eco-system, then I might as well open up the consideration to everything else. So I am currently looking towards fuji as a take everywhere/every-day option. Fuji has after all paid a lot of attention to quality glass for their APS-C line. So the 35 f2 prime, and the 18-55 f2.8-4 coupled with the X-T30 is looking like a very good option. Especially considering the DR performance of the fuji/sony sensor compared to my R.
So I for one would like a APS-C option in RF mount, or canon will have to step things up a notch when it comes to the lenses, sensor, and over all camera performance to get me to get a EF-M mount camera as an every day walk around option.
