ridiculously small apertures.

Too small an aperture than needed - yes - ridiculously small with a 24 mm - no.

a) probably past the diffraction limit

A diffraction limit only becomes relevant if you enlarge a print large enough - perhaps 24-36 inches wide at f13 depending on the lens. Only at this sort of magnification might you begin to see a slight softening of image quality.

Often any diffraction softening is less than other aberration softening wide open!

b) 'normal' flash guns simply don't have enough power to fill large venues at f13 - usually you're limited to much large apertures, even with D910, D5000 etc

I suspect the OP is trying to light the people near the camera rather than give a full exposure to an entire large venue.

An SB 900 at f11 200 ISO comfortably goes to 16 feet - enough for most groups with a wide angle lens.

Variable grads in something like Lightroom can be used to bring up background shadows or tone down foreground highlights.

Fun shot for "Gin Train" event with 95% of the light from a Nikon SB 900 with diffuser dome - and a little help from Lightroom.

In lots of ways good photography is much more about how equipment is used rather than the equipment being used.
