Canon 24-70mm 2.8L I (Original version)

I'm currently shooting weddings using a Canon 5D Mark III and I had been using primes until lately where I've liked having a zoom more.  I have an older tamron 28-75 2.8 which is okay, but its soft and much better at F4.  KEH has a 20% overstock sell and the 24-70mm 2.81 L (original) is on sell 20% off.  I'm not going credit crazy and buying all new and fancy.  I've been building my kit with cash and avoiding financing a ton.

I think that 24-70L 2.8 would be an upgrade now, but I'm trying to decide if its worth getting that now, or if it's better to wait and consider the Tamron 24-70mm 2.8 G2 or wait a while for the 24-70L mark II.

I do like the fact the mark I would be a canon lens, so I know it will always work.  My tamron 28-75 2.8 gives me a communication error probably once every shoot or two.  I can only assume its because its a reverse engineered Tamron lens, especially being older.

The budget side of me says get the Mark I.  Reading online, the Mark II is better, but I'm not sure if its drastically better.
