Got a question or two for you Florida or other tropical locale...

...residents.  OK - the scenario is that I reside in central North Carolina and we have various banana trees around our home (which I planted years ago).  Usually, by the time the first freeze arrives in late October or early November, my trees get to be 12 feet tall before they die back (and start growing again in the Spring).  OK - before you question why I'm posting this here, do note that the images shown below were taken with the M100/15-45 combo - so I guess this qualifies - haaaaaaaaaa!!!!!

OK, so I go out this late afternoon when walking up to one of my banana trees (which is around 6' tall), I noticed this outcropping of bananas (or are they plantains?).  My banana trees never produced fruit of any type in the past - but this year, wow.....  So I snapped some photos of the fruit with my M100.  Are these banana's or are they plantains?  And if they are plantains, when and how are the best way to pick them and eat them (cooking them first I imagine since plantains are different than bananas if that's the case).
