What is the overhead light doing here?

Hello Folks,

I'm relatively new to studio photography, but not photography in general.

I see quite a few Behind the Scenes images where there's a large umbrella overhead, e.g

From "Sue Bryce Education"

What is the overhead light doing?

I have seen such lights descried as "fill" but surely there it will create more shadows not dilute those from the non-overhead light?  Is it just a giant soft hair/rim light?

Judging by the light in the image on the ladies face, how the brightest part is opposite the non-overhead light, seems like it's the main light source?

Cheers

Graham
