And how do you know it's not already a loss leader at $2500? Any inside info on how much does it cost to design and produce such a lens?

Well, the Sigma 18-35/1.8 which is the closest thing, was introduced at $800 and can be had new for <$600 for quite some time now. And that's including the cost to reverse engineer the various mounts it's available for.

Pretty sure Sigma isn't selling those at a loss, considering they're just selling lenses and not camera bodies.

So, according to your logic, only the focal length and aperture is important. All 50mm f/1.4 lenses should cost about the same to design and produce?

The Sigma 18-35 is stellar in both build and image quality. I expect all top quality lenses to cost about the same to design and produce, yep.

You pay extra for brand and quality control. Given panasonic's track record on quality control with high end lenses, I suspect the 400% markup goes to the Leica branding.
