Minimum focus distance was my concern with buying this lens. I have the 50 1.8 it was great on my cropped 800D but in my eos R a bit wide but that being said I find it works well in other situations. I have the Tamron 70-200 2.8 SP gen 2 that does really well but a bit heavy to do portraits. I am using the eos R. The RF lens are very costly but I would not want nor could I afford an 85 mm 1.2.

looks like I may just have to bite it and buy the cannon 85 mm 1.8.

Minimum Focus Distance in the 85 1.8 will be enough to do headshots. If you want to get closer than that, then you will run into problems. I think you should give it a try; it focuses better than the 50mm 1.4.
