Re: Fuji S5 Pro in 2018... Madness?

Having read the initial question, I´ve looked at my old S5 Pro files yesterday.

Well, the do have a different look than, say, a 5D II. But: much of that is due to the fact that they contain no blacks, as is easily seen in post. You have to  use the left slider with basically every file to get some real black and contrast into the shot. After that it looks pretty ordinary.

As to the colors: Yes, they´re different too. They work pretty well with people, in combination with the rather flat gradation curve that the S5 Pro applies to JPEGs people shots can look rather magical. Yellows jump at you in some shots, too. The files generally look less "digital". I just wouldn´t use the S5 Pro for landscapes, as grass and leaves turn to mush because of the low resolution and the flat profile and "people" colors make landscape shots look rather bland.

But the DR is really good, using RAW seems hardly necessary (never used RAW with the S5 Pro or with any of the old digital cameras anyway. Makes a lot more sense now with the new sensors).

And frankly, if you want really great colors, there is no way around shooting slide (preferrably MF) film anyway, even today.
